Compare Business Healthcover

Can a UK company with 2 employees get group health insurance?

Yes — many UK group health insurance schemes start at two employees. How two-person limited companies compare SME PMI, who counts as an employee, and when individual cover is the right product.

Yes. A large share of SME group private medical insurance is built for two lives and up. A two-director company, or a director plus one employee, is a normal enquiry. The mistake is buying a consumer family policy and calling it “business cover”.

Who counts as the two people

Insurers care about eligible employees on PAYE (and sometimes salaried directors). Unpaid spouses who are not employed usually cannot be “employee number two”. Shareholders who do not work in the business may not count. Tell the broker the legal setup: Ltd, LLP, or partnership.

What a two-life quote needs

Dates of birth, occupations, postcode, whether dependants are required, and whether anyone has recent treatment. Two older directors will price very differently from two people in their thirties. Occupation loadings apply in some trades.

QuestionWhy it changes the quote
Both directors, no other staffSome insurers treat this as a small group; some prefer three lives
One employee on PAYEUsually a straightforward SME group
Want spouse coverDependant rates and eligibility rules
Manual / high-risk occupationPossible decline or loading

When two people should not use a group scheme

If there is no employer-employee relationship (two friends, not a company), group PMI is the wrong wrapper. If only one person needs cover, individual PMI is usually cleaner. If the company is not yet trading, wait until there is a real payroll — empty schemes get declined.

Frequently asked questions

We are husband and wife directors. Does that count as two employees?

It can, if both work in the company and the insurer accepts director-only groups of two. It is not guaranteed. Disclose the relationship; concealment causes claim problems later.
